About Liverpool University Hospitals

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust consists of Aintree University Hospital, the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital and Liverpool University Dental Hospital.

We serve a core population of around 630,000 people across Merseyside as well as providing a range of highly specialist services to a catchment area of more than two million people in the North West region and beyond.

The Challenge

Aintree Hospital were faced with replacing two fuel storage tanks that had fallen out of specification. Due to contractor error had their bund contingency had also been compromised. The challenge for the client was to manage the ongoing requirement of large quantities of stored liquid fuels, whilst also mitigating the risk of failure due to both fuel quality and lack of product.

Our Solution

The appropriate Liverpool University Hospital stakeholders pieced together a management plan based on risk. With our support we placed together a programme of works that would sustain the current capacity of fuel on site, whilst at the same time removing all risk associated with the failed tanks and pipework.

The Results

Liverpool NHS are now waiting for their new bunded mild steel storage tanks to be built. Currently there are supported by a successfully commissioned temporary storage tank which provides 55,000 litres capacity. In March 2023 RSM will install two new bespoke fuel storage tanks which will give Aintree hospital both a complaint system and real-time visibility of all fuel storage levels.

Tameside and Glossop NHS

Like most NHS customers that RSM support, the trust wanted a comprehensive service provider to empty, clean and then test their current system; but to then also (if needed) be able to compliantly remove the current tanks and deliver, install and commission a new system. The trust had found it difficult to find a provider who could deliver a complete turnkey solution.
