Understanding EV grants
Grants for electric vehicles (EV) and electric vehicle chargers (EV chargers) differ depending on where you are located in Europe, and they differ hugely.
Here, RSM have brought together everything you need to know about these grants in the UK and how tailored support from us can help you make the transition in a way which means you utilise compliantly and effectively the government grants available.
Road to Zero
Currently, the UK has a comprehensive strategy for the move to electrification which is called the ‘Road to Zero’. The UK government has an official department, named Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) which, along with various supporting government departments, is working to end the sale of fossil-fuel vehicles by 2040.
Rapid Growth
The use of electric vehicles is growing rapidly in the UK, in 2020 the UK government published statistics from the Office of National Statistics which stipulated that more than 164,100 fully electric vehicles were on British roads. They also stipulated that there were more than 373,600 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) on the road.
6 to 10%
More recently, a set of figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that in 2022 fully electric models accounted for 6.7% of total new vehicle registrations, and if we add plug-in hybrids to this, the figure increases to north of 10%.
EV Grants
There is a raft of government support available for people and businesses looking to start their journey to using electric vehicles.
As of 27th September 2022, OZEV has launched a series of schemes focusing on charge point funding grants for a number of different purposes and type of charge point installation applicants. These grants are offered namely to destination chargers, however, there is also funding available for public authorities to install on-street charge points.
Workplace Charging Scheme
The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a voucher-based scheme that provides eligible applicants with support towards the upfront costs of the purchase and installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints. This grant can be used in conjunction with the EV infrastructure grant for staff and fleet.
EV infrastructure grant for staff and fleets
Small-to-medium-sized businesses can get grants to install electric vehicle charging infrastructure in their commercial car parks. The grant covers up to 75% of the cost of installing the infrastructure needed for chargepoints to operate and for future chargepoints to be installed, as well as the cost of any chargepoints installed.
The On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS)
Open for application from local authorities, the scheme is run by The Energy Saving Trust on behalf of OZEV and offers funding for 60% of the capital costs involved in procuring and installing on-street electric car charge points and dedicated parking bays, up to a value of £7,500.
The EV infrastructure grant for residential car parks
The EV infrastructure grant for residential car parks is for entities that rent, lease or manage properties on behalf of clients in the UK.The grant covers up to 75% of the cost of installing the infrastructure needed for chargepoint installation.
EV chargepoint grant for landlords
The EV chargepoint grant for landlords is for residential or commercial parking spaces. To apply you must be a landlord or other entity that rents, leases or manages properties in the UK.
Getting ready for EV
To ensure your site is ready to EV charging you’ll need to conduct a feasibility report which will help you understand whats needed for your site.
Assessing the realistic nature of what might be involved in converting, or upgrading, your current infrastructure means that an effective, safe, and experienced investigative survey will save time and money in the long run.
An expert feasibility survey from RSM is a site visit from a qualified and accredited electrical engineer who will investigate your current systems and infrastructure to create a report that will give you the granular detail necessary to install electric vehicle (EV) charging points.
