Fuel tank decommissioning
The decommissioning and removal of fuel storage tanks is likely to become a much more common occurrence as our reliance on petrol and diesel engines declines in favour of more environmentally friendly alternatives.
Safety of the tank, the site housing it and the surrounding area is paramount – and this demands expert attention.
With many years of fuel tank decommissioning experience to our name, RSM Fuel Management provides the expertise and diligence to get the job done efficiently and effectively.
What is fuel tank removal?
Tank decommissioning and removal can mean multiple things – tanks can be decommissioned and left in-situ or removed.
You can only leave a tank permanently on site if the Environment Agency or NRW (Natural Resource Wales) are satisfied there is no risk of soil or groundwater pollution.
Whatever the option, making the tank safe is done by removing any remaining fuel inside the tank and pipes (this is known as bottoming). The process for fuel tank decommissioning or removal is as followss.
Assessment
Our experts thoroughly assess the condition of the tank, ensuring we are able to develop a safe and effective plan to remove or decommission your fuel tank.
Planning and prep
We will then put together a plan to safely remove or decommission the fuel tank with minimal disruption to your operations. We will ensure your site is prepared for the safe removal or decommissioning of your fuel tank and disconnect all pipework, ensuring no leaks in the process.
Fuel tank decommissioning
For fuel tanks being left in-situ, our expert engineers will remove any explosive vapours by filling the decommissioned tank with a sand and cement slurry, hydrophobic foam or foamed concrete under the scrutiny of a Petroleum Officer from the Trading Standards Service.
Fuel tank removal
For fuel tanks which are beiing removed, we will safely empty and remove or deconstruct your fuel tank, minimising disruption to your organisation and safeguarding the environment.
Why do I need to have a tank decommissioned?
Old fuel tanks are notorious for leaking causing environmental contamination of soil and waterways.
Modern fuel blends are more corrosive towards older steel fuel tanks.
Acting sooner rather than later could save you money and is better for the environment.
